Come celebrate Taiwanese Heritage Week with one of the things we love most about Taiwan, the food! In the parking lot of the Taiwan Center, various Taiwanese community groups will be selling food and drinks. Taiwanese American Professionals – San Diego (TAP-SD) will be selling at a booth, so come out to support us! Better yet, help us prepare the food or help to sell it!

Items are purchased with tickets which can be bought on site or in advance at the Taiwan Center. Advance ticket sales are 11 tickets for $10. On site sales are 10 for $10. Note: some booths sneak in sales before 3pm and many sell out early, so don’t be late! Earlier is better!

Started in 1993, the Taiwanese American Cultural Festival has grown into an annual landmark event for the Bay Area community, drawing thousands of visitors from all over the world to experience Taiwan’s unique cultural heritage and to recognize the contributions of Taiwanese Americans today!

The festival enhances social interactions and cultural exchanges among communities with different ethnic backgrounds and strengthens relations between the United States and Taiwan – emphasized by this past year’s Why Taiwan Matters Congressional Hearings.

The exhibitions at the festival will include demonstrations using Taiwanese glove puppets, Taiwanese arts and crafts, games with prizes, visual displays to illustrate Taiwanese technology, as well as a marketplace with orchids from Taiwan. Craving for delicious Taiwanese food? There will be all sorts of specialty foods, including red bean cake, fried vermicelli, tea eggs, Hakka mochi, bean curd with peanuts!

The Taiwanese American Professionals – San Diego (TAP-SD) board will be holding a delegation workshop at the Taiwan Center. This is a hands-on workshop that will cover basic meeting management and effective delegation. All TAP-SD board members will be present at this event.

Mr. & Ms. Formosa Culture Pageant Presented by UCSD TASA

TASA at UCSD wishes to spread awareness of beautiful Formosa by presenting our second annual Mr. and Ms. Formosa Culture Pageant.

The pageant will select talented young men and women to compete for the crown of Mr. & Ms. Formosa. The winners will be determined based on talent, intelligence, and their representation of Taiwanese culture. In addition to contestant performances, we will also feature guest performances (to be announced). Our mission for this event is to recognize college students who embody Taiwanese American culture while also promoting Taiwanese Americans as a whole. We hope that each participant of this event, whether contestant or audience, walks away with a greater knowledge of Taiwan through a captivating and unforgettable night.

Furthermore, Mr. and Ms. Formosa will be a philanthropic event with all proceeds going to Tzu Chi, a non-profit organization originating in Taiwan with roots in community service and disaster relief. We firmly support Tzu Chi in their goals and hope to assist them in their efforts to help those in need.

UC Santa Barbara’s Taiwanese American Student Association’s (TASA) biggest event of the year is here! Background:
Sheng Wang is a Taiwanese Texan who developed and honed his comedy in the thriving standup community of the San Francisco Bay Area. He performs jokes based on personal experiences and observations and addresses common non-sense with honesty and ill logic. His refreshingly affable stage presence combined with a healthy penchant for absurdity and self-deprecation make his act hilarious and universally accessible.

He has toured with the Comedians of Comedy and American Eagle’s ‘Campus Comedy Challenge.’ He has also appeared on Comedy Central’s ‘Live at Gotham’ and attended the ‘Just for Laughs’ comedy festival in Montreal. Wang’s half hour Comedy Central special aired in 2011. NBC also awarded him with a holding deal that same year. In March of 2012, Wang will tape for John Oliver’s Standup Show.
