Come join the Central Texas Chapter of the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA) at their sponsored screening of the 2009 award winning independent film “Formosa Betrayed,” which highlights the ongoing struggle of Taiwanese people to maintain their identity and right to determine their own destiny separate from the orbit of authoritarian and hegemonic China.

After screening the 104 minute film, there will be a Q&A session chaired by local FAPA chapter president, Timothy Bradberry.

Taiwanese American director, Tim Tsai, will debut his short film “Post Racial,” at the first Asian American Theater project. The film is about a screenwriter on a quest to eliminate all racial stereotypes from his screenplay. Viewers see the writer’s story continually being reworked on screen to the point of ridiculousness.

The Beauty of Taiwan Photo Exhibition in Austin, TX

Austin-Taichung Sister Cities Committee proudly announces our next major event, “The Beauty of Taiwan” photo exhibition which will take place from March 1st -24, 2012 at the Xiang Yun Temple, (香雲寺), and from March 12 – 24 at the Rotunda area in the State Capitol. There will be a grand opening reception on March 12 at 5:30pm in the State Capitol, main conference room.

“The Beauty of Taiwan” photo exhibition features 100 the award winning photographs from Taipei City and Taiwan, introducing the beautiful sceneries and the daily activities of people through Taiwan. This event is sponsored by the Taiwan government and hosted by Austin-Taichung Sister Cities Committee and Austin Taiwanese community in Austin.

The Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association (ITASA) East Coast Conference takes place on February 16-19, 2012! This year it is being held at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, and they have many incredible events planned. The tour of Atlanta will feature the Coca-Cola and CNN Headquarters, as well as Centennial Park, where the 1996 Summer Olympics were held! Great keynotes like the Instant Noodles Crew (who were on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew season 6 competition) will also be there!

“Dear Taiwan” Documentary Screens in Atlanta and North Carolina

Dear Taiwan is a documentary by Director Chen Lihkuei that explores the topic of Taiwanese identity among Taiwan’s youth today. Taiwan Centennial Celebration in Houston, TX

Taiwanese dance troupes, music and food are just some of the many activities families will enjoy as the Houston Asian Jaycee Foundation hosts the city’s first Taiwan ROC 100 Festival, a centennial celebration honoring the establishment of the Republic of China (ROC).  Located at the Stafford Center, the festival grounds will stretch across ten acres and feature a variety of authentic, multicultural fare from local restaurants, live entertainment, pop concerts, traditional martial arts demonstrations and more.  Attendees will find a specialty play area for children of all ages filled with moonwalks, crafts and other fun activities.  In addition, a showcase of local Taiwanese-owned businesses will be onsite during the festival.

Families may purchase pre-sale tickets on the festival’s website from July 1, 2011, to September 1, 2011, which includes a $2 credit for concession items. Limited free parking for the event will be available along Murphy and Cash Rd.
