In honor of friends and families impacted by 228 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/228_Incident), FAPA-YPG NY/NJ welcomes you to a special screening of A City of Sadness, a Taiwanese historical drama that tells the story of a family embroiled in the tragic “White Terror” that was wrought on the Taiwanese people by the Kuomintang government (KMT) after their arrival from mainland China in the late 1940s. During this period, thousands of Taiwanese were rounded up, shot, and/or sent to prison.

The film was the first to deal openly with the KMT’s authoritarian misdeeds after its 1945 turnover of Taiwan from Japan, and the first to depict the 228 Incident of 1947, in which thousands of people were massacred.

A City of Sadness was the first Chinese-language film to win the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival.

Seating is limited to 20. Please use this signup sheet below:

It’s been 65 years since “The 228 Incident” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/228_Incident) — and its aftermath still lives with many Taiwanese Americans whose families were deeply affected in both spoken and unspoken ways. Come hear from members of the local Taiwanese American community as we share answers to the questions we don’t often ask each other:

1. As American citizens who aren’t formally taught about 228, how did we learn about it?

2. What effect did learning about 228 have on us, if any? How do the memories of those events affect us today?

3. As Americans who don’t necessarily have strong ties to Taiwan, how much does what happens in Taiwan matter to us today or in the future?

SCHEDULE:

6:30-7:00pm Light snacks/refreshments & BYO food if you’d like!
7:00-8:30pm Panel discussion, Q&A

PANELISTS (so far):

Jonathan Lee, 2nd generation Taiwanese American
> Advisor, Formosan Association of Public Affairs Young Professionals Group
> Taiwanese American Professionals member & volunteer

Chieh-Ting Yeh, 1.5 generation Taiwanese American
> Creator, The Notebook TW: www.thenotebooktw.wordpress.com
> Former member of ITASA National Board of Directors

Karen Lin (moderator)
> Engagement Director, American Citizens for Taiwan

The goal of this event is to create a safe space to share personal stories and perspectives on how we identify with the events of 228 and U.S.-Taiwan issues today. The views of the panelists do not officially represent that of any single organization or group, and everyone should expect to participate with respect and open-mindedness. Audience participation is encouraged and if you have any ideas/thoughts on how else you’d like to remember 228, please contact me at karen.t.lin@gmail.com.
