Run time: 77 min. | Taiwan | Language: English and Mandarin with English subtitles

Deep in her heart Tony Coolidge’s mother always had a desire to bring her family back to Taiwan to meet their relatives. Born to a Taiwanese mother and American soldier he’s never met, the gentle, soft spoken Tony was always bothered by the fact that his mother “made a concerted effort to shield (her children) from her culture and from her language” If there was to be a family reunion in Taiwan, Tony was going to have to be the one spearheading it.

Not long after graduating college Tony’s mother was handed a death sentence. After loosing her battle with cancer, her oldest son begins to delve deeper into his cultural heritage. After successfully organizing an international cultural and heritage celebration in the United States, a festival member invites him back to Taiwan.

With his wife and brother by his side, Tony embarks on a personal journey to his homeland where he soon discovers that his family are descendants of an indigenous tribal culture called the Atayal. After settling on the island of Taiwan over three thousand years ago, indigenous people now comprise less than 2% of the island’s population. Tony is so moved by the plight of his ancestors and a culture living on the brink of extinction that he gradually becomes a staunch advocate for his people.

We follow Tony as he traverses his native soil embracing each person he meets and every cultural breakthrough he encounters as a springboard to enlightenment. – Scott Marks

Jen Shyu Seminar: Hidden Musical Traditions of East Timor, Taiwan, & China

Date: Monday, October 25, 2010
Time: 7:00pm – 9:30pm
Location: The Stone
Address: NW corner of Avenue C & 2nd street, New York, NY
Facebook event page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=162219400472446

Admission is $20. 100% of proceeds will go directly to the teachers, singers, and instrumentalists who graciously allowed Jen Shyu to record and learn from them.

The full title of this seminar is “Hidden musical traditions of East Timor, Taiwan, & China & the context of improvisation and composition within.”

Performance artist & vocalist Jen Shyu will show some rare video footage of her research fieldwork recordings from East Timor, Taiwan, and China. She will also share some translations of these ancient songs’ lyrics that she recorded during her time in East Timor this past summer, which the elders believe have never been written down or translated into English.

After showing footage, she will perform on vocals, piano, Taiwanese moon guitar, er hu, and the “lakado,” a bamboo instrument from East Timor, playing some original compositions inspired by different aspects of this fieldwork over the years. It will be casual, open to Q/A, followed by a workshop (instrumentalists and vocalists should be prepared to play should they wish to).

“Taiwan -The Crucial Keystone of Asia”: Why Freedom, Identity, and Democracy Must be Preserved

Keynote speaker:

Dr. Jerome Keating is an educator, trainer, consultant and writer who currently lives in Taipei Taiwan. With diverse degrees and certificates from universities such as Michigan, Notre Dame, and Syracuse, he has worked as a professor, human resource specialist, technology transfer manager on the Taipei and Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit Projects, and author.

Though recently retired from National Taipei University, he is still active in many fields. His co-authored book, Island in the Stream, a Quick Case Study of Taiwan’s Complex History is now in its 4th edition (2008). A second work, Taiwan the Struggles of a Democracy was published in 2006; it has a Chinese translation. A third book Taiwan the Search for Identity came out in early 2008 and is in a bi-lingual format. Likewise he has had numerous articles published on the many aspects of Taiwan’s political and international status. In his writings, Keating is pro-democracy and uses the African proverb, “Until lions have their historians, the tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunter,” which he applies to the history of Taiwan. As Taiwan is buffeted about by the desires, whims and greed of the hegemonic powers surrounding it, the world has never asked the Taiwanese what they want for their country and their lives.

Keating speaks regularly to Taiwanese groups in the United States and participates in conferences. In October 2007, he visited seven European capitals, Brussels, Paris, Prague, Warsaw, Budapest, Berlin and London with four other scholars. They met with members of parliaments, think tanks, university professors and students and discussed the need of the twenty-three million people of Taiwan to have space and recognition in the world.
