TaiwaneseAmerican.org is proud to co-present these Taiwan-specific short film programs:

Eye on Taiwan
Taiwan, one of the top ten most densely populated islands in the world, teems with a dynamic society and culture. In this series of Taiwanese films, young up-and-coming filmmakers urge audiences to consider a range of social and political issues. Amidst rapid economic and social development, these films explore the plights of the elderly, foreign laborers, and struggling farmers. They also examine the struggles of Taiwan’s youth as they attempt to reconcile burdens imposed by a demanding society with their hopes for a brighter future.

Taipei 24 H
What does a day look like in Taipei? Taipei 24H invites eight directors to employ their innovative styles and distinct perspectives to create a filmic essay of Taipei City. This special program is partitioned off into eight time frames and shows what events unfold throughout the course of the day. In this collection of films, Taipei is depicted as a place that can be at once absurd and playful, dreamlike and gritty.

And don’t miss the festival’s Centerpiece Presentation:

Au Revoir Taipei
Developed from his short film Mei, Bay Area-bred Arvin Chen’s feature debut explores Taipei at night. The film follows the lovelorn Kai (Jack Yao), recently dumped by his girlfriend Faye, who has left for Paris. Devastated, Kai parks himself on the floor of a local bookstore to learn French on the cheap. There he meets Susie (Amber Kuo), the shopkeeper who expresses an interest in the brokenhearted boy. Enticed by the idea of surprising his ex in Paris, Kai takes out a loan from a retiring gangster, Bao (Frankie Gao), who in return asks Kai to retrieve a unexplained package. But only if it were that easy. Bao’s gangster wannabe nephew, Hong (Lawrence Ko), cooks up a haphazard scheme to intercept the package, unaware that the police already have their eyes on the entire operation, thus sending Kai and Susie in an adventure through the cityscape of Taipei.

Jeremy Lin Nearing Deal with Warriors

Former Harvard point guard, 6-3 Jeremy Lin is close to signing a deal with the Golden State Warriors. Lin was born and raised in California and led Palo Alto High School to a Division II championship. That means Lin will be playing for his hometown team next year if the deal goes through.

The contract is rumored to be a 2-year deal with the second year being a team option. The Warriors will guarantee at least half of his potential first year contract of $500,000.

Lin will likely get an immediate chance to play with the Warriors because of their depth at the point guard position. He may back up guards Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry.

On a personal note, because this is a Perspective here on TA.org, I am so happy it’s as if I signed the deal. I grew up playing basketball since I was six years old and I remember my dad and I practicing in the schoolyard until the sun set. I watched Houston Rockets games almost every single night, cheering on my hometown team. I remember I told my dad that when I grow up I want to be a basketball player.

Things didn’t really work out that way in the end. I grew up to be a quite average 5-8, got cut from my middle school basketball team tryouts, finally realizing I would probably never really grow up to be a basketball player in the NBA. I set my goals on other things like hitting the books.

I went on to go to school in the East Coast and now I find myself playing a little less basketball now, but still watching from the sidelines. Basketball has always been a big part of my life and now it just got bigger.

So this is for all the Taiwanese Americans out there playing basketball for their high school or college team. This is for all the Taiwanese Americans studying hard in school, and playing pick up ball on the weekends. Most of all, this is for all the six year old Taiwanese American kids who dream of one day being a basketball player in the NBA. If you work hard enough, it can happen.

Jeremy Lin One Step Closer to NBA Contract

Lin is in discussions for a contract from 3 teams.

The word around the NBA summer league is that former Harvard basketball standout, Jeremy Lin, is in serious talks with the Dallas Mavericks, the Los Angeles Lakers, and one other team for a spot on an NBA roster or the Development League. Dallas was the only team to offer Lin a spot on a summer league roster. Lin has averaged 8.0 points, 2.0 assists, and 2.3 rebounds in his current stint with the Mavs. On Thursday, he went up against the NBA’s number one draft pick, and frontrunner for Rookie of the Year, John Wall.

Best of luck to Jeremy in his quest to become the first Taiwanese American to play in the NBA. We’ll keep you updated on his progress.

Lead singer Eric Hsu formed his first indie rock band in 1992, and since then has performed hundreds of shows both in the US and around the globe. With numerous US and Asia tours under their belt, Johnny Hi-Fi’s alternative rock sound has captured fans all over. From the House-of-Blues US tour to the band’s video reaching #8 on MTV Chi’s top 10 video charts, all the attentions helped them land the “Artist of the Month” spot on Billboard Magazine’s Underground series and a feature in the magazine. In 2006, the band made appearances on CBS News, publications such as the New York Times and World Journal, also radio stations from Texas to Taipei. The band then went on to open for Placebo and Supergrass in front of 20,000 fans at the Beijing Pop Festival.
