The North American Taiwanese Medical Association - 2nd Generation Group - is a non-profit organization for Taiwanese American medical, dental, & healthcare professionals interested in advocacy, service, and cultural education.

Background

The post-1965 immigration patterns and the healthcare professional recruitment efforts by the United States during the 1970's brought a wave of migration of Taiwanese health professionals who would ultimately settle in this country with their families...

1980's - 1990's
A series of organizations are founded to bring together highly educated individuals among the 1st generation Taiwanese community across the country. The first such organization was the North American Taiwanese Professors Association (NATPA) in 1981, and was soon followed by NATMA (Medical) in 1984, NATWA (Womens') in 1988, NATEA (Engineers) in 1991, and NATSA (Taiwan Studies) in 1994.



NATMA is Established

1984
The North American Taiwanese Medical Association (NATMA) was founded to promote cultural and educational exchange of Taiwanese American Medical and Dental professionals. The membership consisted primarily of 1st generation Taiwanese Americans.



A 2nd Generation of Health Professionals

10/2004
Dr. David Huang represents the 2nd generation on a visit to Taiwan with 1st generation NATMA members including ex-President Dr. Ei Lin (2003-2005).

03/2005
Dr. & Mrs. Shinn-Shyng Chang and Dr. Julin Tang support Dr. David Huang's efforts to formally organize a 2G group.

05/2005
Dr. Shinn-Shyng Chang and Dr. Julin Tang organize the first meeting between 2nd generation organizers, Drs. Steven Chen, YK Tsai, and Shan Lin, with current Bay area NATMA leadership in Fremont, CA.

07/2005
At the Annual NATMA meeting in San Jose, CA, 2nd generation organizers give presentations on establishing a framework for establishing a group unofficially named NATMA/YG for "Younger Generation."

08/14/2005
The First Discussion Meeting of the Bay Area NATMA/YG, sponsored by NATMA, in Foster City draws approximately 20 healthcare professionals to share their visions for this 2nd generation organization.


09/25/2005
Representatives of NATMA/YG meet with 1st and 2nd generation counterparts in Los Angeles at a National NATMA meeting to specifically discuss integration of NATMA/YG with NATMA.

10/29/2005
The 1st Bay Area Organizer’s meeting occurs at UCSF to continue discussion of NATMA/YG's potential direction and projects.

12/18/2005
The 2nd Bay Area Organizer's meeting occurs in Berkeley to prepare for a January Second Generation Mixer, a future Speaker/Dinner Series, and other events. The organization name, NATMA2G is introduced.

1/14/2006
The NATMA2G website and a Yahoogroups listserve are launched.
