The 2013 Taiwan CMJ Music Showcase

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to interview Eric de Fontenay, the organizer of the 2013 Taiwan CMJ Music Showcase for the Talking Taiwan podcast. During the interview, we covered topics ranging from J-pop to mp3 court cases. I learned from Eric that Taiwanese pop music dominates the Chinese music scene with Taiwanese artists accounting for about 60-70% of ticket sales in China.

This year was the third annual Taiwan CMJ Music Showcase in New York City. It was a part of the larger CMJ Music Marathon, which has been around for 33 years. The CMJ Music Marathon is one of New York’s longest running music conferences and festivals. This year, the musicians being featured in the 2013 Taiwan CMJ Music Showcase are: singer-songwriter Joanna Wang, rapper Miss Ko and DJ Noodles. It is the first time that there’s been an all female line up. Also notable is that two of the artists have grown up in the U.S- one on the west coast and one on the east coast.

Joanna Wang, a Golden Melody award winning singer-songwriter grew up in Southern California. While she started off with a jazz sound, she has come to create her own unique sound, which has been influenced by everything from video game soundtracks to Paul McCartney.

Miss Ko, the first female rapper to win a Golden Melody award went to high school in Brooklyn. She’s been called the “Missy Elliot of Taiwan” and it’s easy to see why that comparison has been made when you hear her music.

DJ Noodles was the 2006 DMC Taiwan Champion and the first female finalist to compete in DMC history. That year she was ranked the top13th DJ in the world finals. She’s also the first Asian DJ to be a resident on Radio FG USA.

On the day of the Taiwan CMJ Music Showcase, Friday, October 18, the Marlin Room at Webster Hall was packed and full of high energy. First to perform was Miss Ko. During her performance she declared, “I’m here to break all stereotypes- that Asians can’t rap and women can’t rap.” Joanna Wang was next and she proved to be a multi-talented musician as she sang, played the kazoo and banjo all at the same time. Then DJ Noodles and Rabbi Darkside kicked things up a notch and the night ended with DJ Noodles throwing what else, but packages of instant noodles into the crowd.

Mission
Global Leadership Organization enhances the world by providing passionate individuals with tangible skills to become leaders in all facets of our global society. We inspire people to become “Social Transformative Leaders,” train them, and empower them to be change agents. We believe that with skills and the right attitude, people can drive tangible results, enact positive change in our world, and leave legacies that transcend our individual lives.

Programs
Global Leadership Organization plans and executes leadership conferences, camps, and trainings through the world.
Conferences: Our flagship conferences are 3-4 days with intense training. We teach our curriculum mostly in small group settings to ensure attendees get individual attention and training. Summits: We organize summits where attendees of our training programs compete in small group teams. Our summits attract leaders, where groups are assigned social-improvement projects. They have 1-2 days to dissect topics (like world hunger, social stratification, etc) and utilize our structured systems to come up with solutions to those social issues.
Chapters: G.L.O. has chapters in high schools and colleges with mentorship programs, trainings, and leadership opportunities.
Certification: G.L.O. provides certification to attendees who complete various levels of our training program, including those who are certified to become trainers.

History
Global Leadership Organization was founded in 2012 by Teddy Liaw. In partnership with the Taiwanese American Citizens League, which Teddy was the National President of in 2012, G.L.O. launched its first leadership conference at UC Berkeley. Attendees from over 30 organizations and 8 states attended. Within a year, conferences at Columbia University and UT Austin were launched. Shortly thereafter, the program was international with a conference in Taiwan. The manifestation of G.L.O. started much earlier as the core curriculum was designed by Teddy Liaw over 15 years and had been taught in isolated modules for years. Teddy formerly was a motivational speaker and frequently toured at high school assemblies and conferences, and had served in leadership roles at several organizations, including CEO at NexRep, National President of TACL, Founder and President of TAP, student body President of UC Berkeley, Berkeley Foundation Board of Trustees, and Founder and President of AAA-Berkeley. Through skills, G.L.O. hopes to help create youth leadership movements throughout the world, create social advocates, and empower “Social Transformative Leaders” to make the world a better place. Today, G.L.O has spread its training to students and adults throughout the world, impacting many nonprofit and for-profit organizations.

LID Camp counselors lead students through five days of cultural workshops, team-building activities, and educational games. Relaunched in 2009, LID camp has grown in size and scope with awesome workshops, speakers, and activities.

ABOUT TACL-LID
The Taiwanese American Citizens’ League “Leader Identity Development” (TACL-LID) camp has a storied past. It began in the 1980’s as a way for 1st generation to connect with 2nd generation Taiwanese Americans. The camp has since transformed into one focused on youth to instill a sense of leadership, identity, and community. With a core group of college counselors, campers are transported away from home to various campgrounds each summer and winter. There, they participate in team-building activities and cultural workshops such as rope courses, learning to speak Taiwanese, and how to deal with the various pressures of adolescence.

At the very core of this camp is community. Every activity is separated by big group or small group, which the counselors will lead. Don’t miss out on this fun and exciting time at camp!
